Nigeria Engages New South Wales Premier on Trade, Investment & Diaspora Advancement

Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Australia, New Zealand and the Oceanic States, H.E Ambassador Dr. Olufemi Pedro has formally presented a comprehensive partnership agenda to the Premier of New South Wales, the Hon. Chris Minns MP, during the recent high-level engagements with the State’s senior leadership.

Strengthening Economic Ties
In his address, Ambassador Dr. Olufemi Pedro underscored Nigeria’s position as Africa’s largest economy and consumer market—home to over 240 million people, vast critical minerals, a thriving tech ecosystem, and immense agricultural potential. Nigeria and NSW are natural partners, and to harness this, he proposed the inaugural NSW–Nigeria Trade & Investment Mission in 2027.
This strategic platform will connect businesses and investors across key complementary sectors: ✅ Agribusiness & Food Security ✅ Healthcare & Medical Technology ✅ Mining & Critical Minerals ✅ Renewable Energy ✅ Technology & Financial Services ✅ Infrastructure Development
Championing the Diaspora Community
The High Commissioner also raised critical issues affecting the vibrant Nigerian community in NSW, seeking practical collaboration that benefits both the diaspora community and the State:
🟢 Skills Recognition: Advocating for recognition of WAEC, NECO, and Nigerian university degrees as proof of English proficiency—removing barriers for our skilled professionals (doctors, nurses, engineers) to address local workforce shortages.
🟢 Professional Pathways: Proposing accelerated assessment frameworks with NSW Health and Education authorities.
🟢 Community Infrastructure: Seeking government support for a Nigerian Community & Cultural Centre in Western Sydney—a hub for settlement services, cultural preservation, and mobile consular access.
🟢 Youth & Families: Partnering on mentoring, STEM programmes, mental health awareness, and leadership development.
🟢 Cultural Recognition: Formal acknowledgment of Nigeria’s Independence Day (1 October) and support for an annual Nigeria Festival to celebrate our rich heritage.
A Shared Vision
As High Commissioner Dr. Olufemi Pedro noted, “We come not merely with requests, but with proposals for practical partnerships that will generate lasting benefits for New South Wales, Australia, and Nigeria.” The Nigerian High Commission in Canberra remains fully committed to working with the NSW Government to unlock new opportunities and build a brighter, more prosperous future for all. 🇳🇬🤝🇦🇺
